Thoracic and Lung Surgery

Trauma surgery is a surgical specialty that utilizes both operative and non-operative management to treat traumatic injuries, especially in an acute setting like an accident. The trauma surgeon is sometimes responsible for resuscitating, stabilizing and evaluating the patient and leads the trauma team. Trauma injuries can range from fractures or dislocated bones to soft tissue injuries, shock and burns. Trauma and orthopaedic surgeons often work together on a patient to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions of the musculoskeletal system.

As internationally trained thoracic surgeons with decades of experience, we are committed to delivering world-class treatment for our patients. We specialize in the surgical management of lung cancer, and other complex conditions in the chest.

Our practice stands out for its extensive expertise and use of cutting-edge techniques. What is Lung Cancer?

Lung cancer happens when abnormal lung cells grow uncontrollably and form tumors. These tumors may block airways, affect breathing, and spread to other organs. In Singapore, early detection with lung cancer screening can make a big difference in treatment success and survival rates.

Types of Lung Cancer

There are two main types:

Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)

The most common type, often linked to smoking but also seen in non-smokers.

Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC)

Less common but more aggressive, usually requiring chemotherapy.

Some patients are found to have lung nodules during routine scans. If suspicious, these may require careful monitoring or surgery to remove the lung nodule for diagnosis.

Symptoms to Watch For

Warning signs include a chronic cough, coughing up blood, shortness of breath, chest pain, voice changes, fatigue, or unexplained weight loss. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek early lung cancer diagnosis to allow timely treatment.

Diagnosis & Staging

Doctors may use chest X-rays, CT scans, PET scans, bronchoscopy, and biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. Staging determines how advanced the cancer is and guides the choice of lung cancer treatment.

Treatment Options

Treatment is personalized and may include:

1. Surgery: Options include traditional lung cancer surgery via incisions made in the chest area, minimally invasive thoracic surgery, or robotic approach for greater precision, faster recovery, and smaller scars. Patients who are eligible may remove part or all of the affected lung as curative surgery for lung cancer

2. Chemotherapy & Radiation Therapy

3. Targeted Therapy & Immunotherapy
